Promotion of Sustainable Modes of Transport
pp1acf8808.png
Both local and national planning and transport policies encourage more sustainable patterns of travel through the appropriate location of development, encouraging mixed uses and giving greater attention to the needs of pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users in the planning of new developments.

The consideration and promotion of sustainable travel should be incorporated into the master planning process from the outset.

In particular, the internal street layout, opportunities for bus route penetration, bus stop locations, provision of foot and cycle links, shared surfaces and crossing points, should all be considered in the master planning process.

This will ensure that the development is truly accessible and sustainable as well as compliant with policy.

The design of new transport infrastructure is another important consideration under the umbrella of sustainable modes of transport.  In particular, the design of new foot and cycle ways, home zones, bus gates, crossing facilities, bus stops, bus lanes, and intelligent traffic signals that can detect an approaching bus, are often required as part of both pre- and post-planning transport work.
The Benefits

The benefits of our transport planning services in relation to sustainable modes of transport are:

▪ Ensuring sustainable transport
 considerations are incorporated into the
 development at the Masterplan stage.

▪ Ensuring compliance with local and national
 planning and transport policies.

Helping to secure planning approval.

Maximising opportunities for walking, cycling
 and public transport usage.

▪ Minimising post-planning developer financial
 contributions for highways and transport
 schemes.

▪ Reducing the environmental impact of the
 development.
How We Can Help

We are able to provide transportation input to Masterplans, advising on the most appropriate locations for access, identifying opportunities for ‘green’ transport links such as foot and cycle ways, identifying opportunities for public transport access, advising on the suitability of the layout of the site in terms of encouraging access by sustainable modes and providing input in relation to ensuring compliance with local and national policies.

We are also able to negotiate directly with the Local Authority’s public transport teams and the public transport operators in relation to developer financial contributions towards public transport.

In addition, we can undertake sustainable transport audits, whereby we visit a site to determine the existing availability of walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure, to demonstrate that the site can be accessed by a choice of transport modes.

We can also undertake this service in relation to the initial feasibility of a development, to ascertain whether or not there is the likelihood of a site being granted planning consent on the basis of its transport accessibility credentials.
